The publicity machine

I will be posting my next few days worth on Sunday or Monday folks. I've been busy and here's why...

Someone from Radio 4 conducted an on-the-job interview with me about the blog and the book (and the high number of drink-related stuff we deal with). You can hear it on "Broadcast House" at 9am tomorrow (Sunday) - on the radio (obviously) or online...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/news/bh/

I'm a bit apprehensive because I have given up my name and now my voice will be bandied about. At least you will be able to hear me talk through some of the blog just like I think it when I write it up :-)

So I wouldn't mind your opinions on how this works out because I'm sure, in the run up to the book launch, I will get a lot more of this stuff to do and I find that prospect a bit unnerving.

Speak to you all again soon.

Will your interview be available on the listen-again service? I'm working 13 hours tomorrow but I really want to hear it.

Yes, you can download the programme or subscribe to podcast - just follow the link I have placed on the post.

Listening to your 'bit' now, and this is the first time I've seen your blog - but it has that unfortunate 'polka dot' background with very small font size which is very difficult to read.

Could you not change to something a bit more legible as it appears well worth a read. Maybe have a look at the format used by 'NHS Blog Doctor' Dr John Crippen.

Just heard it, very good :-)

came across great - just wish they mentioned where you could find the blog at the end - maybe it will be on their website. Look forward to the book.

The polka dots have already been toned down and its an established design for the site now. It could be that your particular screen resolution doesn't like them. On most computers I find them quite well blended into the background with the text standing out clearly.

If others still see the design as a problem, please let me know...

I quite enjoy the polka dots, please don't change them.

Blast, I haven't been online for the past two days and I missed it, but have contacted Waterstones asking them how I pre-order your book, why? BECAUSE I WANT IT.

polka dots are fab. I dont think you need to change a thing!!

As for the publicity and all i think you should be very proud of yourself. I have already preordered the book and will be giving it to my family too as prezzies.

Keep up all of your good work and stay safe

Have just listened to your bit on BH - I recorded it because I was out earlier. I thought it sounded great although it was strange to hear your voice. Like a book, you build up a mental image and voice of someone when reading their blog and its weird when the real and imagined don't quite match. It hasn't put me off though :o) Be encouraged! You read well, sound good (even if you do remind me of someone I used to work with) and you do a fantastic job. Enjoy the distraction from the drunken world out there :o)

I'm sure I could have done better. I personally don't like the sound of my own voice on a recording. That was my first time for something like this and it's a learning curve.

I'm glad I didn't put you off though!

Don't worry, I'm sure you will get it when it comes out.

'I'm sure I could have done better'

Don't be so hard on yourself! You did great. You are a real person and you were talking about a real job.

And none-one likes the sound their voice played back to them..... apart from actors maybe!

I will not be buying your book. I heard your radio 4 broadcast and found it censorious. I note your casual use of racial sterotyping 'Brazilians are very passionate people'. There seems to me an implied racism in your comments regarding people speaking foreign languages,'and unless I learn Urdu or Hindi very fast...' neither of which you have the slightest intention of learning I would guess. Well, I hope your self-congratulatory money making venture is a big hit whoot whoot!

I wonder why you feel you even need to read the blog then?

I have opinions, just like you and I try to avoid too much unnecessary confrontation but I am hardly racist simply because I mention a few languages. Ask any Brazilian if they are a passionate people yourself and see what they say.

Do not confuse my right to freedom of speech and expression for your right to denegrate just for the hell of it and my 'money-making machine' is not a necessity for me; I already have a successful business and do well enough with other ventures that you know nothing of.

No, I will not be learning Urdu or Hindi. I have enough trouble with French, so I prefer to speak and hear English - that way I can make a clinical judgment. Oh and if you have been reading for some time you will note that I mention Scottish drunks often, is that okay?

Having said that, at least you expressed your own opinion without descending to rudeness.

I think anon should perhaps refer to his/her dictionary and seek a definition for racism. I doubt very much that any reference in your blog could be considered remotely racist.

I dont undertand why people feel the need to read other peoples blogs which "apparently" offend them and to top it all feel the need to critisize the author of the blog. If you dont like what you read....then dont read it?? It is not a diffcult concept to comprehend. I thought we were all entitled to express our opinions and in particular in a blog like this to express our thoughts as individuals.

xfm I hope this person doesn't put you off continuing to write this blog. YOu have many many readers that support what you do and what you write and only want you to have all the success in the world with your publishing venture.

Keep up the good work and ignore those who try to put you down because you dont deserve it!

Helen
Ps sorry for having a rant but i just get so mad when i see people doing that!

Helen

Rant away.

I'm used to this; I got a LOT of it in the beginning and then it simply fizzled out. I really don't mind criticism as long as it is not personal or abusive. This person at least had the education to keep it clean.

I delete any comments that are unpublishable - kids read this.

I won't stop writing but if I ever cross a line, I expect to be told.

xf,

I think you have a kinder and perhaps more patient nature than I have hehe.

As long as you dont let it get you down. As i said earlier youhave many loyal and longstanding readers who support you in the work that you do.

Looking forward to your next post...

Like Robin I too had the book/film thing going on in my head whilst listening having built a picture of you in my head. I agree with the other posters. If there is something that offends you then stop reading the blog and if you feel the need to be so vehement in your criticism at least have the courage to give a name (Having said that I can't even work out how to get my name to appear next to the picture thingy!!!)
